Aluminum alloy 6063 T5 sheet is an aluminum-magnesium-silicon heat-treatable alloy and is one of the most popular alloys in the 6000 series. Depending upon its temper, the mechanical properties of 6063 aluminum can vary greatly. The most common tempers available are 6063-T1, and 6063-T4. Mostly used in extruded architectural shapes, electrical components and conduit, and seamless and structural tube and pipe, aluminum alloy 6063 T5 sheet aluminum is produced with extremely smooth surfaces that make it easier to anodize. It also has excellent resistance to corrosion, particularly stress-corrosion cracking. Aluminum alloy 6063 T5 sheet is fairly easy to machine and is highly weldable. After welding, the material may soften and lose strength at the connection, but a post-weld heat treatment can be applied to restore strength and hardness.
6063 aluminum is widely used to produce long constant-cross-section structural shapes including “L” and “U” shaped channels, angles, pipe and tubing in many different shapes and sizes.
Aluminum alloy 6063 T5 sheet is commonly referred to as an architectural alloy. It has a high resistance to corrosion with excellent finishing characteristics. 6063 has average machinability and forming hot or cold is acceptable. Also due to its conductivity it is utilized in electrical substations. Commonly used in the manufacture of pipe railings, furniture, windows, stair rails, and in pipe railing.
The biggest problem that many people have when welding aluminum is that the material is much softer than steel and so welds much more quickly. It is also much easier to burn through aluminum, particularly aluminum alloy 6063 T5 sheet, which is relatively soft and ductile when compared with 6061 aluminum. You can use either of two filler wires for welding 6063. Using 4043 wire will result in a more attractive and more easily polished weld, and 5356 wire will result in a stronger weld, but one that will have a frosty appearance that is somewhat difficult to polish.
