6101 aluminum alloy plate a is widely used for electrical bus bar conductor applications for use in enclosed bus electrical installations. Because aluminum 6101 is a high electrical conductivity aluminum alloy also possessing good mechanical properties.

Aluminum 6101 is stocked by 9 North American distributors and produced by 11 large mills. Distributors will offer small quantity buys while mills will generally only sell large quantities, with delivery times anywhere from 10 to 50 weeks depending on size and form required

6101 aluminum alloy plate is stocked primarily in Bar Products by 8 distributors but is also available to a lesser extent in Tubular Products.

Aluminum 6101 is easy for cold work or cold formed in either the annealed or aged conditions. Annealing is done at 775 F for 3 hours at temperature, followed by controlled cooling at a rate of 50 F per hour down to 500 F, then air cool. A stress relief anneal (after cold working) may be done at 650 F with air cooling.

Aluminum 6101 has good machinability by conventional means. Either carbide or high speed tool steel tooling can be used. It is suggested to use an oil base lubricant during machining operations.

6101 aluminum alloy plate can be welded by all of the standard processes, including gas torch welding. The preferred method of welding is by means of inert gas arc welding for best results. Filler rod of the same alloy should be used. When welded in the heat treated condition the subsequent parts will be lower in strength because of weld heat input.
