2014 aluminium alloy plate is an aluminium-based alloy often used in the aerospace industry which is easily machined in certain tempers with high hardness. However, it is difficult to weld, as it is subject to cracking. The alloy may be formed by conventional means. However tight bend radius should be avoided and forming is best done in the T4 or T3 temper. Welding should be done by inert gas consumable electrode arc method for best results. The alloy is subject to cracking during welding so fixturing should be arranged for minimum strain.
Alloy 2014 aluminum alloy plates are a high purity form of 2024 and is normally supplied in 1.50″ – 6.00″ plate. Available in T851 temper, this plate alloy exhibits good strength retention and creep resistance at elevated temperatures up to 350 degrees. Fracture toughness levels of alloy 2014 aluminum plate are significantly higher than 2024-T851. This alloy is recommended for those applications requiring better short-transverse ductility, high strength and good machinability and has excellent exfoliation corrosion resistance. Fatigue properties of alloy 2014 are similar to those of 2024-T851.
Aluminum 2014 alloy plate is used to manufacture truck frames and aircraft structures which is the second most popular of the 2000-series aluminum alloys. It is commonly extruded and forged. The corrosion resistance of this alloy is particularly poor. To overcome this, it is often clad with pure aluminum. If unclad 2014 aluminum is to be exposed to the elements, it should be painted as a corrosion protection measure. The alloy is readily cold worked in the T3 and T4 tempers and is more difficult to form in other tempers
